Cinema Perfecto Magazine - Issue 1

Advanced Movie Production is included in the Command Course Plus. This section of the course is very compelling as we get to be a fly on the wall on the set of an indie feature film. You'll see the frustrations and triumphs of the crew as they work with a limited budget on location. You'll also learn the improvisational mindset required for an indie production.

Advanced Lighting is included in the Command Course Plus. This instruction covers very specific techniques for lighting 13 setups. Examples include problematic setups such as shooting around firelight, shooting around window light and lighting small objects such as you might shoot for the B-roll.

Digital Compositing is included in the Command Course Plus. This is indispensable information for getting optimal results when shooting green screen content. There is some post-production information provided as well as a raw HD green screen footage file on the disk you that can pull into your editor (Note: Mac only as it is an HD .mov for which a PC codec doesn't exist.)

Finally, Audio Intermediate is included in the Command Course Plus and builds on the concepts covered in the Movie Production DVDs. This section will help you understand the finer details of capturing audio, which can make the difference between your film being perceived as amateur or pro. CPM

Our Rating for This Product:

Pros:
Overall this is a high quality production with extensive content that is an amazing learning experience for the enthusiast or entry-level filmmaker and an excellent reference for more experienced filmmakers and film students. The DVDs are well packaged and there are nice extras like a laminated pre-flight checklist, a spiral-bound field manual and a production prep audio disk. There are also additional support documents on the DCT web site such as a 67 page printable table of contents for the Advanced Movie Production DVDs and exercises that can help with your story development. Overall, this course really feels like a labor of love and is a high value purchase.
Cons:
The content can be a little dry at times, but unlike a professor you can fast forward to what you are looking for and still reference the skipped content later. You will also need to find other sources of information for post-production and the business side of filmmaking as this course primarily covers production.
Additional Info:
DCT has many video outtakes and additional documentation on their site found at: http://www.digitalcinemacourse.com. At the time of this writing the Command Course containing 20 DVDs with over 25 hours of content plus extras is $449- and the Command Course Plus containing 33 DVDs with over 45 hours of content plus extras is $549-. We recommend the Command Course Plus. The Advanced Movie Production DVDS alone justify the extra $100, and if you are planning on doing digital composting then you will benefit from the additional instruction.
